Presets are a creative starting point, not a one-click final edit. A few small adjustments usually make them fit your image beautifully.
Each preset is created around a certain kind of light. Some presets will look better in backlight, some in bright direct sun, and some during golden hour, sunrise, or sunset. This means that not every preset will suit every frame in the same way. Try a few options, choose the one that feels closest to the mood of your photo, and then make small adjustments.
After applying a preset, start with exposure, white balance, contrast, and shadows. These small changes are usually enough to make the preset fit your image more naturally.
The same preset can look slightly different depending on your camera model, lens, lighting conditions, skin tones, and whether you are editing a RAW or JPEG file. My desktop presets are created and tested mainly for RAW files, because this is how I shoot, but you can also use them on JPEG images. JPEG files may need a softer touch: reduce contrast if needed and fine-tune white balance and tint.
